"Mr. President," Simmons said, "this may not be a good time to ask, but do you have any idea on what will happen with the project? Will we continue?"
Carr lowered his head. "I know I said it depended on how this mission ended, Ray. We may have to put it on indefinite hold, at least until we're certain no one else has the plans. But even then, I may decide to trash the whole idea. We'll have to wait and see."
Chapter 19
Aboard the Zodiac
After the explosion, and as expected, the sounds of choppers and MiGs changed direction. It could only mean they were called back to the Presidio. Patrol boats were another matter. There was at least one east and one west of the archipelago, the area of the Caribbean that circled Isla de la Juventud. An unknown was the number possibly in the main area of the Caribbean, keeping watch on U.S. ships and choppers.
Slade tied off the Zodiac to a tree root close to the waterway exit. Winds were coming from the east at five knots, keeping the Zodiac secure against the root. At times all A.T. could hear was the sound of water slapping against the boat. If there were patrol boats, they were either out of range, or had powered back, listening for other boats or aircraft. But with low tide in two hours, the crafts would be staying away from most of the islets, especially those that were ringed with coral reefs.
There wasn't any time to take a breather. A.T. hurriedly reorganized rucksacks to accommodate additional gear, including NVGs and helmets. Nothing would be left on board that could identify them. Sitting up on the gunnel, they checked weapons, and loaded full magazines.
Adler was sitting next to the outboard, ensuring it would fire up with the first pull of the rip cord. The success or failure of A.T.'s plan rested mostly on his shoulders.
Finally, they checked the Draegers. A.T. had done this more times then they could remember. Even so, each man checked his own, before another man rechecked it.
Grant finally asked, "Are we good?" Thumb's up from everyone. He glanced overhead. Still heavy cloud cover, but it wouldn't block the GPS signal. He set the coordinates, then reached for the phone James was holding toward him.
